An Anchor is a link to a location within a page. To create
an anchor, click on the
icon on the toolbar.
Netscape Communicator calls and anchor a target. When you
click on the
icon, a Target Window appears that looks like this:
Type in the name of the target and click OK. You will immediately see a target icon appear in front of the target that looks like the example below:
This is a target.
When the web page is veiwed using a browser such as Netscape, the target icon disappears.
This page has an link at the bottom of the page with the text Top of Document. The link is associated to a target or anchor at the top of the page, called "top". When you click on the "Top of Document" link, the page scrolls up to display the top of the page.
Another example of an anchor or target can be found on the page titled, Creating Classroom and School Web Pages. Notice that there are five targets or anchors on the page. The menu at the top of the page is used to move quickly to each anchor.
